What is the downside of ceramic tiles?

Ceramic pool tiles are a cost-effective and practical choice for many residential pool builds, and a quality ceramic tile professionally installed will perform reliably for years. However, there are genuine limitations to ceramic compared to other pool tile options – particularly for pools in Brisbane’s demanding subtropical climate – that are worth understanding before you commit to a selection.

The primary technical limitation is water absorption. Ceramic tiles typically absorb between 3% and 7% of their weight in water, compared to below 0.5% for porcelain. In a Brisbane outdoor pool environment, this higher absorption rate creates a cycle of wetting and drying – combined with significant daily temperature fluctuations – that puts more structural stress on the tile body over time than a denser, lower-absorption material would experience. Over many years, this can manifest as cracking, lifting and grout failure, particularly on horizontal surfaces like pool floors and steps where water and heat exposure are most intense.

Chemical resistance is the second consideration. Pool water chemistry – chlorine, pH adjustment chemicals, salt in saltwater pools – interacts with the tile surface and the tile body over time. Ceramic’s more porous surface is slightly more susceptible to chemical penetration and the discolouration or surface degradation that can result. Quality ceramic products with a well-vitrified surface perform significantly better than lower-grade alternatives, so product selection matters considerably within the ceramic category.

Aesthetically, the range of ceramic pool tiles has improved markedly in recent years, but it still lags behind porcelain in terms of large-format options, surface finish variety and the quality of stone and concrete looks achievable at the manufacturing stage. For a luxury pool or a design where the tile finish is central to the aesthetic intent, porcelain typically delivers a more sophisticated result.

The final consideration is longevity relative to cost. Ceramic is less expensive upfront, but if it requires replacement sooner than a porcelain equivalent, the lifetime cost difference narrows. For family pools and lap pools where the goal is a reliable, functional finish at a reasonable budget, ceramic is a sound choice. Where the investment in a longer-lasting, lower-maintenance finish is justified, porcelain is typically the more cost-effective decision over the life of the pool.
